What it does—and when it fits
Frontend Design is Anthropic's opinionated design-and-implementation guidance for distinctive production interfaces. The current SKILL.md asks the agent to ground the visual direction in a concrete subject, make deliberate typography and layout choices, and match implementation complexity to the chosen aesthetic.
This is aimed at Frontend engineers building product interfaces. Compare the examples below with your task, then review the limitations, permissions, and risks before installing.
- Set an aesthetic thesisChoose a defensible visual direction tied to the subject and audience.
- Design with real contentBuild hierarchy and composition around the product's actual message.
- Ship working UITranslate the direction into production-oriented HTML, CSS, or framework code.
- This profile is manually organized around the current upstream SKILL.md workflow.
- The capability boundary remains explicitly tied to Anthropic.
- Core uses, limitations, and risks are separated for pre-install review.
A GitHub discussion distinguishes frontend-design as a design philosophy guide, not a packaging or build pipeline.
Use it to choose visual direction, typography, and layout; pair it with a separate build tool only when the delivery format requires one.GitHub issue #272 · anthropics/skills ↗INSTALL BY AGENT

From brief to interface
Frontend Design example: plan first, then build
A teaching example based on the pinned Anthropic SKILL.md workflow. The brief is fictional; this is not generated output or an independent runtime test.
Create an event page for a neighborhood bookstore. First-time mobile visitors should quickly find the next event, its date and venue, and how to reserve a seat.
Start with the audience and primary job. Design choices should help visitors find and reserve an event—not decorate an abstract SaaS template.
Ask for a compact plan: 4–6 named color tokens, type roles, a layout sketch with alignment, and principles that connect those choices to the audience.
Check the plan against the brief. A bookstore does not automatically call for sepia, serif headlines, or identical cards; keep choices only when you can explain their fit.
Run the page and complete the find-and-reserve task at phone and desktop widths; separately check keyboard focus, contrast, and reduced motion. The Skill does not certify these qualities.
Defaults it asks agents to question
These are patterns to review, not a ban list. Anthropic's instructions say the project brief takes priority.
The same card kit everywhere
Identical rounded cards and soft shadows can flatten sections with different jobs.
A palette picked before the subject
Cream, serif, and terracotta—or a dark surface with acid accents—need a brief-specific reason, not habit.
Decorative template chrome
Repeated all-caps labels, arbitrary one-word highlights, and gradient washes can make a page feel templated.
Use frontend-design to redesign the event page for a neighborhood bookstore.
Audience: first-time visitors, mostly on mobile.
Primary job: find the next event's date, venue, and reservation action.
Preserve the existing booking flow and event data.
Before coding, draft a concise design plan (4–6 named color tokens, type roles, a layout sketch, and principles). Check it against this brief and revise generic choices before implementing.
After running the page, critique it at 390px and desktop; check keyboard focus, contrast, and reduced motion.Use this prompt to run a real project test; it is not a scorecard that proves design quality. Run the result in your own project and review it.
THE TRADEOFFS
Advantages and tradeoffs
Notable strengths
- This profile is manually organized around the current upstream SKILL.md workflow.
- The capability boundary remains explicitly tied to Anthropic.
- Core uses, limitations, and risks are separated for pre-install review.
Limitations
- Aesthetic judgments remain subjective and still need stakeholder review.
- Distinctiveness does not automatically guarantee accessibility, performance, or conversion quality.

BEFORE YOU USE IT
Risks to review before use
Style over function
A strong visual direction can obscure usability needs. Verify keyboard access, contrast, responsive behavior, and task completion separately.
Upstream instruction drift
Behavior can change with upstream updates. Record the commit used for important workflows and review updates before adoption.
SECURITY
What the permission profile means
- Declared access remains governed by the current upstream SKILL.md and runtime requests.
- Treat repository files, web content, and tool output as untrusted input.
- SkillSignal has not independently executed or security-audited this package; external skills.sh labels are not SkillSignal certification.
Not a security certification. External ratings are attributed references. SkillSignal has not independently executed or security-reviewed this Skill.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frontend Design Skill FAQ
What is the Frontend Design Skill?
Design constraints that push generated interfaces beyond generic AI UI. Frontend Design is Anthropic's opinionated design-and-implementation guidance for distinctive production interfaces. The current SKILL.md asks the agent to ground the visual direction in a concrete subject, make deliberate typography and layout choices, and match implementation complexity to the chosen aesthetic.
How do I install the Frontend Design Skill?
Open and review the listed source, choose the project or personal path for your Agent, then verify the first run in a controlled project. Open the listed skills.sh page and upstream repository; verify the current SKILL.md.
Is the Frontend Design Skill safe to use?
SkillSignal checked the source on 2026-09-23, but that is not a runtime test or security certification. Review the “Style over function” risk first and begin with the least access required.
What does Anthropic's frontend-design Skill do?
It guides an AI coding agent through frontend design and implementation: ground the visual direction in the product, audience, and job; plan typography, color, and layout; review that plan against the brief; then build and critique the interface. It is not a standalone design app or a substitute for stakeholder review.
Can the frontend-design Skill help create a working UI, or does it only give design advice?
It goes beyond visual advice: the instructions ask the agent to plan, check the plan against the brief, build the interface, and critique the result, so they can guide code generation. Run the output in your project and separately verify keyboard access, responsive behavior, contrast, and motion preferences; the Skill does not certify those qualities.
Is frontend-design only for landing pages?
No. Anthropic describes it as guidance for building new UI or reshaping existing UI. Consider it when a project needs a more deliberate visual direction, typography, or layout. It does not replace product requirements, brand rules, usability testing, or an accessibility review.
