Why the old command fails
The command reported in the upstream issue is `npx skills add https://github.com/microsoft/azure-skills --skill azure-hosted-copilot-sdk`. Issue #453, opened September 24, 2026 and still open when checked, says the installer clones the repository, finds 38 Skills, then reports that no matching Skill exists.
The issue reporter says the Skill was removed from the repository on July 8, 2026, and reports that a pinned historical version at commit `88cf4369b9b965aab879a154fcfca3212f2833ca` installed locally. We have not run that old version or verified it against today's SDK and Azure requirements; treat it as historical evidence, not a recommended install.
| Item | Evidence status |
|---|---|
| Current install command does not find the named Skill. | Documented in the open upstream issue; not independently reproduced by SkillSignal. |
| The old Skill was removed July 8, 2026. | Issue-author statement; verify against repository history if an exact removal audit is needed. |
| Pinned historical files may be installed. | Issue-author workaround; SkillSignal has not tested that revision or its current compatibility. |
What can you use instead?
The current `microsoft/skills` repository includes a `copilot-sdk` Skill for building applications powered by GitHub Copilot: session management, tools, streaming, hooks, MCP, and deployment patterns. It is broader SDK guidance; it does not claim to be Azure-hosted-specific and should not be presented as a drop-in replacement.
For Azure hosting, begin from the current Microsoft Skills repository and Microsoft documentation for your SDK, language, identity, and hosting target. Select a Skill that is actually present in the current tree, then confirm its instructions match the deployment path you need. We have not identified a verified one-for-one replacement for the removed slug.
- Confirm the exact Skill folder exists in the current upstream repository before copying or installing it.
- Check language, SDK version, authentication model, Azure region, and hosting target against current first-party docs.
- Treat an old pinned Skill as unmaintained until its owner and current requirements say otherwise; review scripts and permissions before use.
Bottom line
Do not copy the old `azure-hosted-copilot-sdk` install command from stale listings. The current primary trail is an unresolved upstream issue, and the reported historical commit is not a present-day compatibility guarantee.
